TWO art receptions THIS WEEKEND!

I have art in two exhibits that will both have receptions this weekend.

This Sat. Jan. 12 from 2-4 pm is the closing reception of the 12th Annual Ohio Online Visual Artist Registry Juried Exhibition at the Carnegie Gallery in the Columbus Metropolitan Main Library. This year's theme is "My Treasures are Within." "Life is Like a Box of Chocolates" is in this exhibit.

Then on Sun. Jan. 13 from 2-4 is the opening reception of MVAQN: Still in Stitches! at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main St., Troy, Ohio. The show runs from Jan. 11-Feb. 18. She Paints With Fabric, Morning Glories for Georgia, and Standing Tall are in this exhibit. All of the pieces in this exhibit are created with fabric.

One of the things that I like about both of these venues is that the exhibit spaces is in an architecturally interesting space.

The Columbus Metropolitan Main Library was built in 1907 with money donated by Andrew Carnegie. When they expanded in 1991 they kept part of the original building which is where the Carnegie Gallery is located. I find it interesting to see how the old and new parts of the building interact.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center used to be a private residence. Mrs. Hayner left her mansion to the Troy City Schools and it had been used as the Troy public library for 33 years but is now a cultural center. It's beautifully restored and is worth the trip just to see the building.

Quilt exhibits in Ohio & Kentucky

Me with my quilt “Kings Yard Farmers Market” at the Artist as Quiltmaker XVI exhibit in Oberlin, OH. See the little red dot just below the left corner? That’s right, it’s sold!

We’re recently visited several quilt exhibits in Ohio and Kentucky, so I thought I’d share it with you so you can take a virtual tour. Most of these exhibits are still happening, with the last ones closing at the end of July, so if you want to take an actual trip, you can do that.

OBERLIN, OH :

From left: “T-Formations” by Sara Bearup-Neal, “Sedona #2” by Margaret Anderson, “Granite Series: Portal” by Lura Schwarz Smith, “Echoes of Important Things” by Christy Gray, and “Wilted 3” by Georgie Cline.

We went to Oberlin because I had a piece in the Artist as Quiltmaker XVI show. I was excited because it’s the first exhibit I’ve been in that has produced a catalog! We went for the two receptions where I was able to meet several of the other quilters.

41 pieces artists from 19 states were selected from over 400 entries, and Ohio artists were well represented.

The exhibit goes through July 27 and is presented by The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts, located in the New Union Center for the Arts, 39 South Main St. in Oberlin. The gallery is open Tue–Sat, 11a–5p; Sun 1–5p.

Also in the New Union Center for the Arts in the south gallery is the FAVA Folding Festival, featuring origami including some origami quilts by Christiane Betten. The show runs also goes through July 10 and has the same hours.

The yard in front of the New Union Center for the Arts has been quilt bombed. Volunteers created and then hung a few hundred quilt squares on the large oak tree, along the railings, and on the fence in front of the building.

The knitters also got in the act. All of the pointy parts of the fence were covered with knitted cozies.

Just down the street at the Oberlin Public Library there are four display cases with small quilts in them. Their Twisted Logic: Two-Color Miniature Quilts by The Twisted Stitchers feature several intricate miniature quilts with traditional patterns and piecing. This show goes through June 8.

Quilted Narratives by Marty Young, who is an AQM XVI exhibitor, is a collection of small art quilts that tell their own stories. The show goes through July 27.

The Oberlin Public Library is located at 65 S. Main St. in Oberlin. It is open M-Th 10a-8:30p, F-Sa 10a-6p, and Su 1-5p. If you go, be sure to check out the enclosed patio area with a lovely wall mosaic.

Down the street the other direction you can see Text, Line, and Traces by Tina Cassara, the juror for the AQM XVI show. Her art is in the Ginko Gallery & Studio through July 27. The gallery is located at 19 S. Main St. in Oberlin and is open T-Sa 10a-6p and Su noon-5p.

A few blocks away in first floor display the Oberlin Science case of the Oberlin College Science Center is Marking Nature: from the dye studio of Sue Copeland Jones who is also a AQM XVI exhibitor. The exhibit will be up through July 27. The building is located at W. Lorain and Woodland St. in Oberlin.

TROY, OH :

New Quilts from an Old Favorite is an annual exhibit and contest held by the National Quilt Museum (in Paducah, KY). The block selected for 2013 was “Jacob’s Ladder.” Part of the travelling exhibit is at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center through June 15.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is located at 301 West Main Street in Troy. It is open T-Sa 9a-5p, M-Th evenings 7-9p, and Su from 1-5p. Admission is free.

PADUCAH, KY :

Paducah, KY, is so far west that it’s almost in Missouri. It’s also known as Quilt City, USA because it is home to the National Quilt Museum and it is where the American Quilters Society started. AQS still holds one of their several annual quilt shows in Paducah. During the second to the last week in April, the town doubles in size. I hear you have to make motel reservations a year in advance.

Me with my quilt “Inside of a Dog” at the Fantastic Fibers exhibit in Paducah, KY.

As well as being a pilgrimage for me, we went to Paducah because I had a piece in the Fantastic Fibers exhibit at the Yeiser Art Center, just a few blocks away from the National Quilt Museum.

We were blown away by the fantastic fiber pieces in the show. Unfortunately the show has closed, but you can see all of the 59 entries online on their website. I felt Ohio was well represented in this show, also.

The Yeiser Art Center is located at 200 Broadway in the historic Market House, which also house a history museum and a theater. There are art galleries and restaurants on either side of the brick-lined streets. It is open T-Sa from 10a-5p when they have a show. Admission is $5.

Of course we also went to the National Quilt Museum. They own over 320 quilts and usually only have 50-60 of them on display at a time. These really are some of the best examples of quilting in the country, and they own several of the award winning quilts entered in the annual American Quilter Society shows. Quilts that probably take years to produce. Most of them are more traditional in style, and many are quilted by hand. We were in awe of the miniature quilts, and we also enjoyed the travelling show from the European Patchwork Meeting.

The National Quilt Museum is located at 215 Jefferson St. in Paducah. They are open M-Sa from 10a-5p. Admission is $11.

Paducah is also home to many fabric stores including Hancock’s of Paducah which has over 30,000 square feet of almost every fabric imaginable.

"Inside of a Dog" at the Fantastic Fibers Exhibit in Paducah, KY

Me with "Inside of a Dog," 22"w x 17"h x 7"d, Mar. 2012

My art pieces "Inside of a Dog" is going to be in the Fantastic Fibers exhibit in Paducah, KY. The exhibit is from April 5 through May 24 at the Yeiser Art Center, 200 Broadway and is open Tues. through Sat. from 10 am-5 pm. There will be an artist reception on Sat., April 5 from 5-7 pm.

If you haven't been to Paducah before (or if you haven't even heard of it), there's a lot of quilting-related things to do there, including visiting the National Quilting Museum. Also, The Paducah Convention & Visitor's Bureau's website even has a tab for quilting-related items.

One of the things I'm really excited about is that my piece will be there during AQS Week. The American Quilters Society pretty much takes over the town of Paducah for AQS Week. This year it's April 23-26.

I originally made "Inside of a Dog" for an exhibit at the Dayton Art Institute. If you want to read more about how it was made, click here.

Quilt National 2013

Quilt National is a biennial art quilt exhibition that held on odd-numbered years at the Dairy Barn in Athens, Ohio. This year's show includes 88 quilts from 27 states and 7 countries.

The photo at the left is a detailed image that is used as the postcard and cover of the catalog printed for the show. The quilt is "Thru the Lens" by Marianne Burr and has a lot of hand quilting and embroidery.

One of my favorite quilts was "El Cortez, Las Vegas" by Lisa Kijak. You can see a photo of her with her quilt on her blog and she was featured in Aug/Sept issue of Quilting Arts Magazine and you can read an interview about her process on their blog. I love the subject and the colors in this quilt and I appreciate how realistic it is without being flat.

One of the artists I mentioned in both my 2009 and 2011 posts was Paula Kovarik and this year her "Round and Round It Goes" was very impressive. It's a large, round quilt with black thread on a white background. She has quilted some whimsical and some scary images quilted without a lot of stops and starts. It was selected for an "Award of Excellence".

Kathy Nida, who is making her first appearance in the show, has a lot of photos of the quilts on her blog which she took them during the Opening Reception, the only time you're allowed to take photos.

Quilt National is at the Dairy Barn Arts Center, 8000 Dairy Barn Lane in Athens, Ohio through Sept. 2 and costs $8. The Dairy Barn Arts Center is open Tues.-Sat. from 11 am- 5 pm, Sun. from noon-5 pm, and they are also open until 8 pm on Thursdays. After Sept. 2 the show will be grouped into different parts and travel to St. Louis, MO, Columbus, OH, San Jose, CA, and Morehead, MN.

Seasons of Life: Aullwood's Annual Art Quilt Exhibition

"Seasons" fabric mosaics by Pam Geisel, frame sizes are 5" x 7", art is 2.5" x 2.5"

When I make my fabric mosaics I arrange small pieces of fabric on a backing fabric or innerfacing then I cover them with tulle and quilt the layers together and frame them. For this set of four, each one features a tree in a different season and the mats were cut so they appear in a different place in the black wood frame. The frames are 5" x 7" but the art is only 2.5" x 2.5".

For "Spring" I used a light green for the background and sage green, white, and pink for the new leaves and blossoms.

For "Summer" I used a richer, darker green for both the background and also the leaves.

;
For "Autumn" I used yellows, oranges, and reds for the leaves both on the tree and on the ground.

For "Winter" I used a white background to represent snow and no leaves on the tree but there is a tiny cardinal sitting on a branch.

More about Seasons fabric mosaics

These pieces will be in the 21st Annual Art Quilt Exhibition at the Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm which is June 29-Aug. 25. Aullwood is located at 1000 Aullwood Road in Dayton, Ohio and is open Mon.-Sat. 9 am-5 pm and Sun. 1-5 pm. There will be an artist reception on Sun., July 14 from 2-4 pm.

This show has 42 amazing art quilts submitted by art quilters from across the country. The local art quilt group, the Miami Valley Art Quilt Network has quilts by Debra Bently, Ann Diller, Suzanne Kirchner, Fran LaSalle, Lisa Quintana, Carroll Schleppi, and Maxine Thomas.

I wasn't able to attend the opening reception and this is the last week of the show. The last day to see it is this Sunday, Aug. 19. The address is 1000 Aullwood Rd., in Dayton, Ohio. The center is open Mon.-Sat. from 9 am-5 pm and Sun. from 1-5 pm. Admission is $4 but that allows access to the show, the education center and all of the grounds.

International Quilt Festival, Cincinnati, Ohio

The International Quilt Festival happened in Cincinnati, Ohio this past weekend. I went on the last day of the show, so it's now over, but it will be back next year, April 12-14, 2013.

It was fun to see some of my quilting friends like Lisa and Maxine who are in the Miami Valley Art Quilt Network. I also got to spend a little bit of time with one of my on-line friends, Cathy.

And I got to see quilts by my on-line Etsy quilting group Quiltsy, and it was fun to recognize their work before I looked at the quilter's name. They all graciously gave me permission to post the photos that I took of their quilts.

"Hollyhock Cottage" by Sally Manke

"Silkroad Treasures" by Heather Lair

"Looking Up" by Terry Aske

"Spring Blossoms" by Terry Aske

There were so many wonderful quilts to look at, some you could take photos of and some you couldn't. I was also able to take photos of the "Twelve by Twelve" quilts. They are twelve quilt artists who have created a 12x12 inch quilted art piece based on a theme or color palette.

Theme: Math

Color: Eggplant

The Twelve by Twelve artists are: Deborah Boschert, Gerrie Congdon, Helen Conway, Kirsten Duncan, Terry Grant, Diane Perin Hock, Françoise Jamart, Kristin La Flamme, Karen Rips, Brenda Gael Smith, Terri Stegmiller, and Nikki Wheeler.

If you want to know more about the Twelve by Twelve quilts and quilters, visit their blog. Direct links will take you to the Theme Page and the Color Page.

Other International Quilt Festvial venues:
If you're going to be in Long Beach, CA July 27-29, 2012, you can see the Twelve by Twelve quilts at the there. "Looking Up" will also be at the Long Beach show, and "Spring Blossoms," "Hollyhock Cottage," and "Silkroad Treasures" will be at both the Long Beach and Houston shows.
