Fused: Fiber & Glass, a two-person collaborative exhibition at Village Artisans

Flowers, various shapes and sizes, glass pieces by Sara Gray and art quilts by Pam Geisel

Fiber artist Pam Geisel and glass artist Sara Gray have collaborated to present a two-person exhibition titled “Fused: Fiber and Glass” which will be in the Village Artisan’s Lobby Gallery from September 13 through November 5, with an artist reception on Friday, September 13 from 6–8 pm.

As artistic mediums go, fiber and glass are quite different from each other. Fabric is usually considered soft, flexible, and impervious to breaking while glass is often perceived as firm, rigid, and fragile. One way in which these two mediums are similar is that they can both be fused. Glass fusing is the process of joining compatible sheet glasses together in a kiln until the glass becomes one. Fusing of fabric requires ironing an adhesive to the back of one fabric then fusing it on to another piece of fabric.

“Being able to fuse fabric was a game changer for me,” says Geisel. “Now I’m not limited to squares, triangles, and rectangles found in traditional quilt blocks. The fabric doesn’t have to be pieced with seams; it can be placed randomly.” Gray added, “Fused glass has changed my love for working with glass. Being a stained-glass artist over 20 years and now making fused glass for over 10 years has allowed me to create functional glass art.”

To make the exhibit a true collaboration, they each made pieces based on the other’s art. Gray made a fused art glass piece based on Geisel’s “Chasing Geese” art quilt. When Gray shared photos of pieces she made for the exhibit, Geisel was immediately drawn to Gray’s piano keyboards with rainbow colors. Geisel states “I knew immediately that I also wanted to make a keyboard using hand-dyed fabric in the colors of the rainbow.” Geisel was also inspired by Gray’s square and rectangular plates that had different colored flowers that each had six green leaves. “Pam used yarn for her stems, and I used glass stringers for mine.”

“When we first started working on making pieces for this exhibit, we realized that we’d already been collaborating for many years,” Gray said. Not only have they made custom artwork for each other, they both have been members of Village Artisans for over a decade, with Geisel joining in June of 2012 and Gray shortly after in December of 2012. For several years both women have coordinated the co-op’s annual art festival, Art on the Lawn, although it goes back further than that, when they both coordinated the Glen Helen Nature Arts and Crafts Show from 2006–2011. Previously Geisel coordinated the show with Gray’s mother, Susan Miller. Both Geisel and Gray started selling their art at the 2006 Nature Arts & Crafts Show, with adjacent booth space. “Susan was one of the first people who bought something from me,” said Geisel.”

For “Fused,” the artists focused on using rainbow colors along with the color black. “With both glass and fabric, you have really vibrant colors, but you can’t really mix colors like you can with paint. Instead, it depends on what colors are next to each other and layering colors on top of each other,” said Gray.  “And adding black really makes colors pop,” explains Geisel “which is why we wanted to put our focus on that.”

Art & Soul: a NEW art show this Saturday!

There's a NEW juried fine arts and crafts show in Yellow Springs! This show, Art & Soul, features 29 exceptional artists who “put their souls into making art.” The show is this Sat., Nov. 17 from 10 am-5 pm. It will be in the Mills Lawn School Gym, 200 S. Walnut St. in Yellow Springs, just one block from the main drag (Xenia Ave.) There's plenty of free parking in town and also in the lot behind the school.

There is a $3 admission fee, a portion of which will go to the Yellow Springs Schools and the Yellow Springs Police Coat Fund.

This show is replacing the Glen Helen Nature Arts & Crafts show which has been cancelled. That show had been held the weekend before Thanksgiving for the last 20 years.

Fortunately, several of the artists who used to participate in the Glen Helen show will be in the new show, including: potter Dianne Collinson, photographer Sara Gray, bead weaver Rose Lawson, potter Geno Luketic, lampwork bead artist Theresa Mayer, and Barbara Jones who creates beautiful wool hats and jackets.

You can find photos and bios of all the artists participating on the Art & Soul Facebook page (and you don't have to have a Facebook account to view the page...if it asks you to sign up just close that window).

Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour: meet my three guest artists

The Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour is this coming weekend, Sat., Oct. 20 and Sun. Oct. 21, from 10 am-6 pm both days. This is my fifth year participating as a host, and this year I have three guest artists. We have 27 artists at eight locations with seven guest artists who are new this year.

All three of my guests are artists whose work I admire so much that I own art made by all of them. Instead of using the promotional photos that were provided for the brochure, website, and other print material, I'm including photos of the pieces that we have in our house.

Lisa Wolters makes wonderful sculptural clay vessels that incorporate her love of typography and words themselves by pressing messages into slabs vessels that she then decorates with oxides, vibrant underglazes and touches of clear overglaze.

Libby Rudolf paints lovely watercolors inspired by the beauty of natural spaces around the country and she enjoys paint plein-air. I know she has been busy painting new paintings for this weekend.

Guustie Alvarado makes amazing jewelry, beautiful blown and fused glass creations, and bold mosaic wall hangings which often use fused glass and oil paints or cut glass

The tour is a driving tour. Visit the Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour website for more information about the other hosts and guest artists and to download a tour map. Maps can also be picked up at the Winds Cafe, Young's Dairy, the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce, and at the artists studios the days of the tour. All studios will have red balloons and signs.

Wyoming (Ohio) Art Show this weekend

"Head" over to the Wyoming Art Show!

The art festival takes place this Sunday, May 20, from 11 am to 5 pm at Worthington Ave. and Springfield Pike in Wyoming, Ohio (just outside of Cincinnati). I'll be in booth #73.

I haven't done an outdoor art show since last August so I'm busy locating all the items that I'll need for the show and double checking my inventory. I even made some new table covers. Right now there's a zero percent chance of rain, which will be nice since it rained the last two years.

If you're in the area, stop by and say "Hi."

My art quilt "Carnival of Colors" is in the exhibit OH+5 2012. The exhibit features all mediums and artists from Ohio and the five surrounding states (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan).

The show takes place at the Dairy Barn Arts Center located at 8000 Dairy Barn Lane in Athens, Ohio and runs from January 13 through March 10.  There will be an artist reception this Friday, January 6 from 5 to 7 pm. The Dairy Barn Art Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 5 pm, Sundays from 1 to 5 pm and is open until 8 pm on Thursdays. There is a $5 admission.

I made "Carnival of Colors" last year as one of the Project Quilting challenges. You can read more about how I made the quilt here.  The Dairy Barn is where the Quilt National exhibit is held every other year. To read more about my visit to Quilt National 2009 and Quilt National 2011, click here.

Art on the Commons in Kettering this weekend

Booth for art shows, practice picture

Art on the Commons is this Sun., Aug. 14 from 11 am–5 pm. It's located in Lincoln Park Civic Commons which is outside the Fraze Pavillion on Lincoln Park Blvd. in Kettering, Ohio. I'm in booth #61 which looks like it might be in a partly shaded area next to a grove of trees. I've been watching the weather all week and every day the predicted high temperature keeps getting lower, right now it's supposed to be 74 degrees! Perfect!

This week I finally finished making the last of the three mesh panels, which will allow us to enjoy the breeze at the art shows. I had to set up the canopy in order to get the right size for the mesh walls and panels, so I decided to see how it will look with the artwork and I think we're good to go!

Things to Pack for an Art Show

This last weekend I was at the Westerville Art and Music Festival in Westerville, Ohio (just north east of Columbus). The show is held in Heritage Park, which is a fairly large park with 12’ x 12’ booths with no one behind you. I was up on the grassy area across from the pond.

It was warm when we left. We arrived at 9 am and around 9:30 am I dropped a panel on my foot, it took off a little bit of the nail on my big toe and part of the skin. It didn’t hurt much, but it did bleed. A lot. I didn’t know the toe had that much blood in it. I managed to grab a paper towel and compress it while I looked for the bandages.
Things to pack: bandages.

The photo is not my stash of bandages. This is my emergency sewing kit. I like it because it’s made of a strong plastic. I did have some bandages packed, it just took me a minute to remember where, as it wasn’t in the obvious place.
Things to pack: sandals.Wear the closed-toe shoes while setting up and then change to the sandals.

The show started at 11 am. I was set up at 11 am. It started to rain at 11 am. It rained for three hours straight. I considered bringing a raincoat but thought that when it rains, I’ll be in the tent. What I didn’t think of was what I’d do when I went on a bathroom break.
Things to pack: raincoat.

I did have some large trash bags that I’ve carried around for the last 3 years and never used, so I got one out, cut a head and arm holes then went off.
Things to pack: trash bag.

With the steady rain was a drop in temperature, and even though it was warm when we left, I did take along a long-sleeve shirt, which I put on when it got cool.
Things to pack: sweatshirt for if it gets cool. The raincoat might be able to double for this one.

But I still wasn’t warm enough. Luckily, I had some baby quilts for sale, so I put one over my legs to keep me warm. Three years and it’s the first time it’s been cool enough to make use of some of my wares. In the middle of July.
Things to pack: quilts!

It could’ve been worse. At least it didn’t rain during set-up. It hadn’t rain the night before so the grass wasn’t wet. It was dry in the tent (mostly). And people still came to the show, even in the rain.
Things to pack: umbrella.

On Sunday, the weather was much better, sunny and cool, and the sales were better, also.
Things to pack: sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat or visor to block the glare from the canopy top.
