Monthly Art Quilt Workshop in Yellow Springs

I've often been asked if I teach any classes. I don't currently, but if you've wanted to explore making an art quilt, here's a local opportunity you might want to check out. I am not leading this group, but I do plan on participating. You should have some experience with sewing and know a little about quilting.

The Miami Valley Art Quilt Network is hosting an art quilt workshop in Yellow Springs. The group will meet on the first Tuesday of the month (with no meeting the month of December and the January meeting will be on the second Tuesday). They will meet from 7-9 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 314 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs.

The group will be doing hands-on exercises and working from the book “Adventures in Design” by Joen Wolfrom with the goal of finishing several art quilts by May 2013. Participants do not have to have read the book before starting.

The cost for the workshops is $1 per meeting which will be donated to the church. Quilters who wish to participate are required to become members of the Miami Valley Art Quilt Network by the second meeting. The annual dues are $15.

More information can be found at www.mvaqn.com/Study_Group.html or by contacting Pam Geisel at info@ForQuiltsSake.com.

There is also a group that is meeting in the Vandalia, Ohio area that meets on the fourth Friday from 10 am-noon. There is more info about that on the website.

Annual Art Quilt Exhibit at Aullwood: The Good Earth

From left, my quilt "Sometimes I Dream of Flying," "Lunch Time" (top) and "Apologies to Grandma Moses" (bottom) both by Fran LaSalle, and "Good Earth" by Kathryn Wagar Wright. (Click on the photo to see it larger.)

These are just some of the art quilts in the 20th Annual Art Quilt Exhibit at the Aullwood Audubon Center's Marie S. Aull education center. This show has 42 amazing art quilts submitted by art quilters from across the country. The local art quilt group, the Miami Valley Art Quilt Network has quilts by Debra Bently, Ann Diller, Suzanne Kirchner, Fran LaSalle, Lisa Quintana, Carroll Schleppi, and Maxine Thomas.

I wasn't able to attend the opening reception and this is the last week of the show. The last day to see it is this Sunday, Aug. 19. The address is 1000 Aullwood Rd., in Dayton, Ohio. The center is open Mon.-Sat. from 9 am-5 pm and Sun. from 1-5 pm. Admission is $4 but that allows access to the show, the education center and all of the grounds.

If you can't make it to the show, Lisa Quintana has posted several blog posts about the quilts along with many wonderful photos.

Art on the Commons in Kettering this Sunday

Art on the Commons is this Sun., Aug. 12 from 11 am–5 pm. It's located in Lincoln Park Civic Commons which is outside the Fraze Pavillion on Lincoln Park Blvd. in Kettering, Ohio. I'm in booth #61 which is in a partly shaded area next to a grove of trees. And it looks like the weather is going to co-operate and be  beautiful!

There was a really nice article in the current "Dayton City Paper" about the event.
