"Daybreak is Your Midnight" in Focus on Fibers, Hyde Park, MA

My piece, Daybreak is Your Midnight is in the Focus on Fiber exhibit at the Menino Arts Center in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. That exhibit is open September 9–October 27, 2024 with a reception on Saturday, September 14 from 3:30–5 pm (I will not be there). The gallery is located at 26 Central Ave. in Hyde Park, MA and is open W–F 10–4 and Sa 10–noon.

Last winter I had two pieces in the show The Art of the Quilt which was also at the Menino Arts Center.

"Women's Work" on Exhibit in Artist as Quiltmaker XX

My piece Women's Work is in the Artist as Quiltmaker 20th Biennial Contemporary Quilt Exhibition at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts in Oberlin, Ohio from May 11-July 7 with a reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, June 22, from 1-3 pm. The gallery is located at the New Union Center for the Arts, 39 South Main Street in Oberlin, Ohio and is open T–Sa 11am–5pm and Su 1-5pm.

"Women's Work" in OH+5 2024 at the Dairy Barn in Athens, OH

 

My piece Women's Work is in OH+5 2024 at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. The exhibit is open January 19 through March 10 with a reception on Friday, January 19 from 6–8 pm (I will not be there). The gallery is located at 8000 Dairy Lane, Athens, OH and is open W–Su noon–5pm.

The Art of the Quilt, Hyde Park, MA

A litter farther from home, two of my pieces, Journey and Time Lapse Moon Rise are in The Art of the Quilt at the Menino Arts Center in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. That exhibit is open December 14, 2023–January 21, 2024 with a reception on Saturday, December 9 from 3–5 pm (I will not be there). The gallery is located at 26 Central Ave. in Hyde Park, MA and is open W–F 10–4 and Sa 10–noon. There is an on-line gallery of the quilts in the show on their website.

Solstice: A Community Exhibition

The very first group exhibit that I had a piece in, back in 2006 before I started this blog, was the Solstice Show at the Shirley Jones Gallery in Yellow Springs. For that exhibit, I made the piece A Winter Snowscape. 

Now 17 years later I made another piece (Universe in Motion, above) for a Solstice Show at the Herndon Gallery on Antioch's campus also in Yellow Springs. The exhibit is open December 8–30, 2023, and the gallery is located at South Hall Morgan Place in Yellow Springs. There will be an Opening Reception this Fri, Dec 8 from 6–8 pm. The gallery hours are M–Sa noon–5 pm although the gallery will be closed Dec 24–26.

Dancing Geese and Nine Ball in Momentum exhibit at Front Street

My pieces "Dancing Geese" and "Nine Ball" are included in the "Momentum" exhibit at The Orphanage Gallery, 73 N. Dutoit St in Dayton (part of Front Street on the first floor of Building 200, enter at Door 4E). The event will take place this Friday, Sept. 4 from 5-9 pm, on Sat, Sept 5 from 11 am-4 pm and again on Sun, Sept 20 from 11 am-4 pm. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing.

My Soul in a Blackberry Pie in Life in the City exhibit

My piece "My Soul in a Blackberry Pie" is included in the "Life in the City" exhibit at the Front Street Galleries, 1001 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton. The event will take place this Friday, Aug. 7 from 5-9 pm and again on Sunday, Aug. 16 from 11-4 pm. The plan is to have the exhibit outside in the courtyard unless the weather is bad, in which case it will be held indoors with social distancing. 

Art to UPlift: Watercolors & Art Quilts by Libby Rudolf & Pam Geisel

"Daybreak is Your Midnight" and "Whoo?" are two of the pieces that I have in the Art to UPlift show at the Winds Cafe.

While unfortunately all of the festival shows that I do (Art on the Lawn, Yellow Springs Open Studios, and Art & Soul) have been cancelled for 2020, I did recently get an opportunity to be a part of an exhibit at the Winds Cafe in Yellow Springs. My friend Libby, who paints amazing watercolors, was scheduled to have a show and the person she was going to exhibit with wasn't able to participate so she asked me.

The show can be seen in person at the Winds Cafe, 215 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs when they are open or at our Virtual Reception here. We are not having a reception but are open to meeting people at Winds for a drink or a personal tour.

Both of our husbands are board members for the Glen Helen Association and they have recently helped negotiate for the Association to purchase the Glen from Antioch College. The Glen was closed at the start of the pandemic and hasn't yet reopened and not only are donations needed to make the purchase, they are also needed to reopen the Glen and to keep in running. Libby and I decided that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of our artwork will go to the Save the Glen fund. We'll donate 10% of sales for pieces that are $499 and under and 25% for pieces that are $500 and up.

"Stitch by Stitch" YS Textile Art Group show at the Winds Cafe in Yellow Springs

Stitch By Stitch: A cross-cultural exploration of contemporary textile and fiber art is presented by nine members of the Yellow Springs Textile Art Group. The members, Corrine Bayraktaroglu, Carol Culbertson, Pam Geisel, Gayle Gyure, Bette Kelley, Ramona Kern, Macy Reynolds, Sue Rudolf, and Phyllis Schmidt are all local fiber and textile artists who create innovative embroidery, weaving, and art quilts.

You can view the show during the months of Sept. and Oct. at the Winds Cafe, 215 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs. The Winds Cafe is open Tues.-Sat. from 11:30 am-2:30 pm and 5-10 pm, and on Sun. from 10 am-3 pm, they are closed on Mondays.

There will be an opening reception on Sun., Sept. 15, from 6:30-8:30 pm.

This is our fourth biennial exhibit and this time we've added something a little different.

Since our last exhibit two years ago, Corrine and her husband moved to Arizona. Bette was concerned that Corrine wouldn't be able to participate with us this year (spoiler alert: the owl was made by Corrine) so Bette selected a photo of lichen on a rock that Corrine had taken and she challenged the rest of us to create a fiber piece inspired by it.

I also wrote a blog post about my piece which I call "Only On the Surface" and Bette took a video of the exhibit, which is narrated for her granddaughter (it's about 16 minutes long).

Cosmic Connectivity & Aye, Eye Captain at Sacred Threads in Virginia, July 2019

I have two pieces in the biennial Sacred Threads exhibition. The photo above, taken by Theresa Martin, is from the "Eye Contact" part of the exhibit. For this part artists were asked to make small art quilts that measured 5" high by 23" wide featuring human eyes facing the viewer. (There are more photos of the Eye Contact exhibit on Theresa's blog.)

I thought this was a very creative way to display all of them. Mine is in the lower right of the photo. I call it "Aye, Eye Captain" and it is a pixelized image of a pair of eyes.

My art quilt "Cosmic Connectivity" (left) is in the main portion of the juried show, which highlights art quilts that have a connection to the sacred and/or as an expression of spiritual journey exploring themes of joy, inspiration, spirituality, healing, grief and peace/brotherhood.

This is what I wrote about my piece when I submitted it:

Some people look into the night sky and feel insignificant. I look into the night sky and feel connected to everything else. This is my interpretation of that feeling, that even if I’m not physically attached, I am still connected to other things, similar to the lace pieces that aren’t a part of the larger lace but still connected by the yarn. Carl Sagan says “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.”

The show is up from July 11-28, 2019 at the Floris United Methodist Church, 13600 Frying Pan Road in Herndon, VA (near Washington DC).
