Zephyr - Project Quilting

Challenge recap for "Time is Up":

Your project should be inspired by time, deadlines, or the end.

I was inspired by the end pieces that I had that were leftover from some bookmarks that I made two years ago. To make bookmarks I sew together long strips of fabric in different colors then I cut them down to the size I need. I usually have some leftover pieces that are 8.5" long but under 1" wide. 

If I sewed them together the finished strip would only be about 3/8" (and have a lot of seams) so I was never sure what to do with them. I put them in a drawer and waited for inspiration.

I was working on other bookmarks today (different color theme) and had more cast off pieces. I went to the draw and pulled out these and started arranging and rearranging them.

Because I didn't want the strips to be 3/8", I fused them to a background and used some black fusible bias tape over the edges. I quilted down the bias tape

I thought it was too structured so I quilted down the bias tape then couched on some multi-colored variegated yarn, isn't it just yummy? I decided to name it "Zephyr" which means "a soft gentle breeze" because I thought the yarn looked like it was being blown around but also because it starts with the letter 'Z' which is at the end of the alphabet.

emPATHy - Project Quilting

Challenge recap for "Brighter the Better":

Your project must be bright and colorful - and the more colorful, the better.

I don't think that Bright and Colorful is much of a challenge for me, most of my items are pretty colorful.

This piece has several small pieces of blue, red, and pink fabrics arranged with tulle on top. It was then quilted together with black thread and the black seed beads were added by hand.

The pink triangle looked like a path to me, especially after I added the beads. I've always liked how the word "path" is in the word "empathy" because I think that being empathetic to other people can sometimes be a process.

How Sweet to be a Cloud Floating in the Blue - Project Quilting

Challenge recap for "Tuned in to Texture":

Your project must be inspired by a pattern or texture you find "in the wild" this week.

Back when I was doing graphic design, one of the things I liked to do was to add "visual texture" to page layouts and graphics. Those items really don't have an actual texture but I didn't want them to look so "flat." I've also done this when working with mostly solid colors, such as in "Lavender Diamonds" and all of the Project Quilting "Focus Through the Prism" quilts. One of the reasons work with fabric is because I love to touch it; I love the texture.

I'm always intrigued by clouds. The look like they would be fun to touch, but of course you can't touch a cloud, even if you could reach that high. So even though I had million other ideas, I decided to make something with clouds.

This is a pretty small piece and I made it to fit in this interesting chunky odd-sized wood frame that I had. I also included two pieces of my very favorite green yarn that I like to use for the horizon lines in my quilts (like in "Early Morning Nine Patch" and also "Summer Barn" and probably others that I'm not thinking of at this moment.

The title is a quote by A. A. Milne, the author of "Winnie the Pooh."

Hope - Project Quilting

Challenge recap for "Eight is Great":

Since this is the eighth year for Project Quilting, your inspiration for this challenge is eight.

I had a lot of ideas for this project, so many that I had difficulty deciding which one to do. So I decided to look through my fabric stash and let it tell me. I dug into my hand-dyed fabrics and they wanted to be an flower with eight petals. I was also inspired by the local weather.

This is the view out my studio window today. Which is why I named this piece "Hope."

It is raw-edge applique with micro stippling in the green background with a variegated thread.

Project Quilting Season 8

It's time for Project Quilting's eigth season! It's a three month on-line event that challenges participants to create a quilt in one week, with a week off in between. You can participate in as few or as many as you like. Participants are automatically entered into random prize drawings and at the end of the season there will be grand prizes awarded to all participants, with one entry per challenge quilt, so the more challenges you enter, the better your chances.

The schedule for 2017 is:
Challenge 1: January 1
Challenge 2: January 15
Challenge 3: January 29
Challenge 4: February 12
Challenge 5: February 26
Challenge 6: March 11

Each challenge is posted at noon CDT and due exactly one week later at noon CDT.
