Using Perspective and 3D Art Quilt featured in Art Quilting Studio Magazine

Five of my art quilts are featured in Art Quilting Studio's Magazine's Autumn 2019 issue!

Four of the Americana Series art quilts ("Picnic at Ellis Pond," "Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm," "My Soul in a Blackberry Pie," and "Kings Yard Farmers Market") are included in an article about using perspective with foreground object.

I explain how I made the picnic basket, bicycle, pie, and baskets with apples all larger to indicate that they are in the foreground of the image.

My 3D art quilt "How Does Your Rainbow Grow" is in the "Quilting the Odd & Unusal" section.

The article gives a brief description on how I made this 3D piece and the challenges that came up when I created it.

Art Quilting Studio is published quarterly and is packed full of new quilting techniques and innovative design ideas.

This magazine is one of many publications put out by Stampington & Company. I've heard it's available at some Joann stores. You can find a store near you where it's sold or order it directly from the Stampington website.

Photos from the "Five in Fiber" Exhibit at the Troy-Hayner Center

In case you can't make it to see the exhibit in person, here are photos from the “Five in Fiber” art quilt exhibit at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center.

There are over 60 art quilts made by A. Sue DeSantis, Ronnie Doyal, Pam Geisel, Carroll Schleppi, and Lisa Quintana.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is located at 301 W. Main St. in Troy and is open Mon. evenings 7-9p, Tues.-Thurs. 9a-9p, Fri. & Sat. 9a-5p, and Sun. 1-5p.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 4. Some of the quilts are downstairs but most of them are upstairs in the gallery room and in the hallway.

There will be a presentation by four of the exhibitors on the Dayton Landmark quilts on Sun. Sept. 27 at 2 pm.

If you've never been to the Troy-Hayner, it is a beautiful building (that used to be a private house).  The photo above is the front porch.

"Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm" in The View exhibit

"Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm" deatil

My art quilt "Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm" which features the sunflower field just north of Yellow Springs, is included in the 21st Annual Juried Landscape Competition The View at the Rosewood Gallery, located at 2655 Olson Dr. in Kettering.

The show runs from May 18-June 19. The gallery is open M-Th from 9a-9p, F from 9a-6p, and Sa from 9a-3p. There will be an artist reception this Sun, May 17 from 2-4p.

Edited to add this quilt won an Honorable Mention.

"Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm" in "Wild Lands, Wild Life" exhibit at Aullwood Audubon Center

"Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm," 17.5" x 28"

My art quilt "Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm" is included in the "Wild Lands, Wild Life," the 22nd annual art quilt exhibit at Aullwood Audubon Center, located at 1000 Aullwood Rd. in Dayton, Ohio. The show runs from June 28-Aug. 24 and there will be an artist reception on Su, July 13 from 2-4p. The center is open M-Sa from 9a-5p and Su from 1-5p. There is a $5 admission fee that allows access to the center and also to the farm.

Yellow Springs Americana Series: Sunflowers at Whitehall Farm

Just north of Yellow Springs on State Route 68 there’s a field that for the last several years has had sunflowers planted in it. There have been a few near accidents because so many people stop to take photos because it’s such an awe-inspiring sight.

Part of the property has a wire fence but I decided to use my artistic license and add the wooden fence so I had somewhere to lean the bicycle.

The sunflowers are made from three different commercial sunflower prints that vary in size. I added the brown batik fabric to the center of all the sunflowers to unify them. I also added over a hundred light purple seed beads to represent the centers of the last rows of sunflowers.

I found the perfect hand-dyed fabric that had yellow and green blended together to use for the background behind the sunflower stems.

The chain on the bicycle is black cord that is couched down and the spokes are stitched thread.
