Afterimage - Quilt of the Week

I thought this piece looked like a sun but it was obviously the wrong colors so then I thought it looked like the afterimage of a sun, what you see when you close your eyes after you look at the sun.

Afterimage is defined "a visual sensation occurring after stimulation by its external cause has ceased." Sometimes I feel that all art is an afterimage, it's a visual sensation that is left after the process of creating art has ceased.

The green fabric at the top is a sheer fabric so you can see part of the image from the fabric behind it, also kind of an afterimage.

Relics - Quilt of the Week

I made this piece in honor of a friend who was interested in found objects and repurposing them in art. The fabric and embellishments were hers, including the "sequin waste" that has been couched to the front of the quilt.

An unintended consequence of this title is that every time I read it, I get the lyrics to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock-n-Roll" in my head: 

Call me a relic, call me what you will.

Say I'm old fashioned, say I'm over the hill. 

Today's music ain't got the same soul, 

I like that old time rock-n-roll.

Witch One - Quilt of the Week

 
"Witch One," 6" x 6", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2020

Just in time for Halloween, here's some withcy bling! The background is a shiny plum fabric that changes color depending on how the light hits it. The hat is made with a sheer fabric with silver stars printed on it that allows the background color to show through. And the band is made with a shiny melon colored fabric. I also added a metal button on the band. This piece really glimmers.

It is wrapped around a canvas frame and is ready to hang or prop on a shelf.

Effervescent Zebra - Quilt of the Week

 "Effervescent Zebra," 6" x 6", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2020

Are zebras black with white stripes or white with black stripes? This one is black with rainbow colored dots on it. It also uses the Robert Kaufman Effervescence fabric in the "Mardi Gras" colorway. I used some black yarn for the mane and a bead for the eye.

It is wrapped around a small canvas and can hang on a nail or be propped on a shelf.

Rainbow Heart - Quilt of the Week

"Rainbow Heart," 6" x 6", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2020

Here is another pieces that uses the rainbow stripe fabric from Timeless Treasures and the Robert Kaufman Effervescence fabric in the "Mardi Gras" colorway. I fussy cut the rainbow stripe so the colors would have the red/orange part around the outside and the other colors would meet in the middle. The horizontal purplish strip is also from the rainbow stripe fabric.

There are four buttons: three are a shiny bluish gray and one is a flat purple on top of one of the gray ones. It is wrapped around a canvas frame.

If 6 Turned Out to Be 9 - Quilt of the Week

"If 6 Turned Out to Be 9," Art: 7" x 5" / Frame: 8.5" x 6.5", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2020

The piece which is a small art quilt in a frame, was design based on the number 6 in the font Jokerman.

I used the blue section on the Robert Kaufman Effervescence Gradation Rainbow fabric. I'd been using a lot of that fabric series in a few different color ways. I couched a dusty purple yarn around the edges. When looking at the center swirl it's hard to decide if the blue is on the purple or if the purple is on the blue.

This piece can hang either horizontally as shown at the top or vertically as shown above, which really makes the number 6 obvious.

Tweet & Sing! - Quilt(s) of the week(s)

 

"Tweet" and "Sing!", each 6" x 6", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2019

Like the last few Quilt of the Week, these two use the Robert Kaufman, Effervescence fabric (in the "Mardi Gras" colorway) and a Timeless Treasure rainbow stripe fabric. These two are basically the reverse of each other so I'm doing one blog post for two pieces. "Tweet" is the quilt of the week from Aug. 23-29 and "Sing!" is the quilt of the week from Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

I love cats. I have yet to own a white one but artistically, a white cat was a nice contrast to that fabulous Robert Kaufman, Effervescence fabric (in the "Mardi Gras" colorway).

Breathe - Quilt of the Week

 

"Breathe," 12" x 12", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2019

Although this piece is abstract, it reminded me of lotus flowers, which are images often used in yoga and meditation. I enjoy taking yoga classes and my teacher often reminds us to breathe, which is how this, and it's companion piece, got named.

This piece is made with Robert Kaufman fabric Effervescence Gradation Rainbow fabric on a white background and wrapped around a canvas frame. (I also used this fabric for the Rainbow Zebra that is on the right side of my "Quilt of the Week" banner that's at the top of this page.)

This can also hang on point (as a diamond shape).

Only On the Surface - Quilt of the Week

 

"Only On the Surface," 16" x 14", handmade by Pam Geisel, August 2019

I made this piece two years ago as a challenge by the Textile Art Group to be inspired by a photo of lichen on a rock that Corrine, one of our members, shared. Several of us made pieces that we hung together and it was interesting to see how we all had different results even though we started with the same inspiration. 

Since this group has a show every two years, I'm currently getting ready making new items for the next show, which we will hang in just one month at the Winds Cafe in Yellow Springs (during most of September and October in 2021).

This piece features free motion quilting and embellished with lace, glass beads, and metal beads.

Surface design is common with art quilts and is defined as artwork and embellishments applied to the surface of artwork to enhance its visual appearance, so I thought using the quote from a Joe Walsh song was appropriate.

Eiffel Sunrise - Art Quilt of the Week

This was made using a paper pieced pattern designed by Jennifer Ofenstein of SewHooked.com. 

I made one using Island Batik fabrics in green, blue, and purple. I made this one in 2017 for the Project Quilting challenge "Craving Chocolate."

Millefiori Moonlight - Quilt of the Week

Millefiori Moonlight, 38" x 29", made by Pam Geisel

I made this in 2018 and I was inspired by the colorful sunsets we’ve been having due to the wildfires out west. I also wanted to make a quilt that was primarily dark cool colors (blues and purples) with some pops of warm colors (yellows, oranges, and reds).

Millefiori is a glasswork technique with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the cut ends of the glass cane. The "Roman Glass" fabric by Kaffe Fassett for Westminister Fabrics, which I used for the clouds and on the moon reminded me of millefiori beads.​

The moon doesn't have any quilting on it so it puffs out some. I also added some batting behind it to give it more shape.
