Chasing Geese - Quilt of the Week

Chasing Geese, 20" x 20", handmade by Pam Geisel

The traditional block for the fifth Focus Through the Prism quilt was the Flying Geese block. Technically the block is one triangle with two background pieces that make a rectangle so for this arrangement I have four geese pointing each direction for a total of 16 geese around the black center square.

All of the seven quilts in the Focus Through the Prism series:

- Use all of the seven colors but have one main color (with smaller pieces of fabric almost the same color to give it some visual texture)

- Have a black border with brown stars

- Have bits of the focus color on the black square in the middle, on the border, and on top of the other colors

- Have a piece of black yarn couched on top

- Have curved quilting lines 1/4" apart that echo the shape of the yarn

In this piece the focus color is INDIGO (dark blue) and the yarn represents A BIRD IN FLIGHT.

My series was featured in Art Quilting Studio Magazine's Autumn 2018 issue on working in a series and they were also included with several quilts that other people made for the Focus Through the Prism challenge including the Wisconsin Quilt Expo in 2016. Above is Chasing Geese with some of the other indigo quilts.

Because this is the Quilt of the Week, it is 10% off the original price of $300 and as a special deal, all of the Focus Through the Prism quilts are 10% off through 5/16/21 if you purchase directly from me. Details can be found here

Positively Pinwheels - Quilt of the Week

Positively Pinwheels, 20" x 20", handmade by Pam Geisel

The traditional block for the fourth Focus Through the Prism quilt was the Pinwheel block. There was no way to make this one large block with a black square in the center like Monkey Tail or to have four blocks but have the corners where they meet make the black square like both A Second Self or Cabin Sweet Cabin did, so this one has a nine-patch arrangement with eight pinwheel blocks around the black center square.

In this piece the focus color is ORANGE and the yarn represents WIND BLOWING.

Musings on Flowers, Warm vs. Cool Colors, and Lobby Show Themes

"Morning Glories for Georgia" and "Delightful Daisy" (not to scale)

Today I stopped into Village Artisans, the artist co-op that I belong to in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Today was the day we hung a new lobby show. The theme of the new show is "Spring Forward" so I decided to put in two of my flower pieces. The show will be up through June 3.

"Let a Hundred Flowers Bloom" and "Forget-Me-Nots" (also not to scale)

I removed the two piece I had in the last show and returned them to my spot in the gallery. What I noticed was that these two pieces also had flowers so they would have fit the theme of the new show. The show that they were in was "Warm Colors vs. Cool Colors" and I noticed that the two pieces that are going into the new show would have also been appropriate for the previous show, since "Morning Glories for Georgia" has cool colors, and "Delightful Daisy" has warm colors.

Cabin Sweet Cabin - Quilt of the Week

Cabin Sweet Cabin, 20" x 20", handmade by Pam Geisel

This was the third quilt I made in the Focus Through the Prism series. Like A Second Self, this one has four of the traditional Log Cabin block but unlike A Second Self, I had to get a little more creative to have the black square in the center. Fortunately because there's a lot of quilting, you have to look closely to see the piecing.

I wanted to use the colors in rainbow order and the color that would have the most showing would be purple, so this is the purple one. I also like how the purple interacts with the black border.

In this piece the focus color is PURPLE and the yarn represents SMOKE RISING FROM A CHIMNEY.

My series was featured in Art Quilting Studio Magazine's Autumn 2018 issue on working in a series and they were also included with several quilts that other people made for the Focus Through the Prism challenge including the Wisconsin Quilt Expo in 2016. Above is Cabin Sweet Cabin with some of the other purple quilts.

A Second Self - Quilt of the Week

A Second Self, 20" x 20", handmade by Pam Geisel

Last week's Quilt of the Week was the first of the Focus Through the Prism quilts and it set the style for all the quilts that we still to come. Like the Monkey's Wrench quilt block, the block for this quilt, the Friendship Star, has a square in the middle that I could have made black (like last week's) but I felt the square in the center should be the same color as the adjacent triangles to form the star. But I was able to arrange the stars into a four-patch and make one of the corner blocks of each square black so when they were assembled the black center square would appear.

I chose the yellow fabric for this one because stars are often yellow in artwork.

So all of the seven quilts in the Focus Through the Prism series:

- Use all of the seven colors but have one main color (with smaller pieces of fabric almost the same color to give it some visual texture)

- Have a black border with brown stars

- Have bits of the focus color on the black square in the middle, on the border, and on top of the other colors

- Have a piece of black yarn couched on top

- Have curved quilting lines 1/4" apart that echo the shape of the yarn

In this piece the focus color is YELLOW and the yarn represents A CELTIC FRIENDSHIP SYMBOL (simplified).

My series was featured in Art Quilting Studio Magazine's Autumn 2018 issue on working in a series and they were also included with several quilts that other people made for the Focus Through the Prism challenge including the Wisconsin Quilt Expo in 2016. Above is A Second Self with some of the other yellow quilts.

Because this is the Quilt of the Week, it is 10% off the original price of $300 and as a special deal, all of the Focus Through the Prism quilts are 10% off through 5/16/21 if you purchase directly from me. Details can be found here.
