Four Lovely Little Flowers

I have a solo show at the Yellow Springs Brewery. As I was getting prepared for it, I decided that I wanted to make some more small 6" x 6" pieces wrapped around canvases. I also wanted these pieces to go with "Morning Glories for Georgia," which at 24" x 30" is a little larger. 

I didn't have any more of the green hand dyed fabric that I used for the background but I did have a similar piece of commercial green fabric for the backgrounds, and just like "Morning Glories" I used hand dyed fabric for the flowers.

They are raw-edge applique with the edges sewn down. Three of them are embellished with bead while the daffodil has a vintage button that was the perfect size, shape, and color.

The exhibit at the Yellow Springs Brewery is up through Jan. 5, 2022. The brewery is located at 305 N. Walnut Street in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and they are open Mon.-Th. 1-9 pm, Fri. 1-10 pm, Sat. noon-10 pm, and Sun. noon-8 pm.

Two New Skinny Art Quilts with Funny Names

My husband is a fan of the children's book by William Steig titled "CDB" which substitutes letters for words that create short sentences. For these two, I used a similar approach. The piece on the left is called "ICNINDC" (I See and Eye in the Sea) and the one on the right is ICDbirDNDskI (I See the Birdy in the Sky).

Both quilts have backgrounds made of triangles pieced together with the one on the right being either a sunset or a sunrise.

You might notice with the one with the fish that only one of the three fish has an eye showing, although that is not where the title comes from. It comes from one of the printed background fabrics that looks like it has little orange eyes printed on it.

This one also has yarn couched down like seaweed and seagrass, some gold sequins, and a seashell.

The bird one has some silver sequin stars in the purple area and two red stars in the orange area. It also has some yarn couched along the angles.

The backing and borders are made with yellow, orange, pink, and purple fabrics that match up to the color changes on the front.

Staccato Sunset

 

Staccato Sunset, 29" x 40", handmade by Pam Geisel, Oct. 2021

I see it as an abstract interpretation of a sunset being reflected on the water.

This art quilt is made with 22 strips of fabric that are just under 2" high. Each strip has a piece of square fabric arranged in reverse color order.

Afterimage - Quilt of the Week

 
"After Image," 13" x 10", handmade by Pam Geisel, 2020

I thought this piece looked like a sun but it was obviously the wrong colors so then I thought it looked like the afterimage of a sun, what you see when you close your eyes after you look at the sun.

Afterimage is defined "a visual sensation occurring after stimulation by its external cause has ceased." Sometimes I feel that all art is an afterimage, it's a visual sensation that is left after the process of creating art has ceased.

The green fabric at the top is a sheer fabric so you can see part of the image from the fabric behind it, also kind of an afterimage.
