Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival this Monday, Sept. 2

The Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival is this Mon., Sept. 2 (Labor Day) from 10 am–5 pm. It's held at Northam Park, 2070 Northam Rd. in Upper Arlington, near Columbus. I'm in Booth #102. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Kingsdale Shopping Center and take the shuttle bus from the Chase Bank Parking Lot (3250 Tremont Rd.).

Quilt National 2013

Quilt National is a biennial art quilt exhibition that held on odd-numbered years at the Dairy Barn in Athens, Ohio. This year's show includes 88 quilts from 27 states and 7 countries.

The photo at the left is a detailed image that is used as the postcard and cover of the catalog printed for the show. The quilt is "Thru the Lens" by Marianne Burr and has a lot of hand quilting and embroidery.

One of my favorite quilts was "El Cortez, Las Vegas" by Lisa Kijak. You can see a photo of her with her quilt on her blog and she was featured in Aug/Sept issue of Quilting Arts Magazine and you can read an interview about her process on their blog. I love the subject and the colors in this quilt and I appreciate how realistic it is without being flat.

One of the artists I mentioned in both my 2009 and 2011 posts was Paula Kovarik and this year her "Round and Round It Goes" was very impressive. It's a large, round quilt with black thread on a white background. She has quilted some whimsical and some scary images quilted without a lot of stops and starts. It was selected for an "Award of Excellence".

Kathy Nida, who is making her first appearance in the show, has a lot of photos of the quilts on her blog which she took them during the Opening Reception, the only time you're allowed to take photos.

Quilt National is at the Dairy Barn Arts Center, 8000 Dairy Barn Lane in Athens, Ohio through Sept. 2 and costs $8. The Dairy Barn Arts Center is open Tues.-Sat. from 11 am- 5 pm, Sun. from noon-5 pm, and they are also open until 8 pm on Thursdays. After Sept. 2 the show will be grouped into different parts and travel to St. Louis, MO, Columbus, OH, San Jose, CA, and Morehead, MN.

Art on the Commons in Kettering this Sunday

Art on the Commons is this Sun., Aug. 11 from 11 am–5 pm. It's located in Lincoln Park Civic Commons which is outside the Fraze Pavillion on Lincoln Park Blvd. in Kettering, Ohio. I'm in booth #61 which is in a partly shaded area next to a grove of trees. And it looks like the weather is going to co-operate and be beautiful!
